Grandma’s Thanksgiving Dinner by Maria Hoskins

Hoskins delivers another great family tradition in picture book form to follow up her Christmas Night on the Farm. In this story the family is gathering at Grandma’s farm for Thanksgiving. The table has been set with the good family china and silver, all in the proper places! Grandma has been cooking a feast to share with family and friends that are coming to celebrate the day. You can almost smell the roasting turkey and the baking pies as you turn the pages! Hoskins shares a slice of Thanksgiving traditions from her family in this picture book graced with lovely watercolor illustrations. Hoskins has included some questions at the end of the story so children can begin talking and writing about their own family Thanksgiving traditions. A fine story to share with your family!

Another beautiful picture book celebrating families and Arkansas from Hoskins! The text paired with soft, fluid illustrations perfectly capture a day of exploring in Little Rock, Arkansas and the surrounding area. Readers can almost feel the hot and humid summer day that perfectly captures Arkansas. While introducing young readers to the concept of family reunions this book would also be perfect to share before a family vacation to the capital city of Arkansas. The included activities at the end of the book are a great starting point for young children to begin learning more about their family history and great ideas for sharing family history while at a reunion. This picture book packs a lot of excellent ideas for expanding and encouraging learning about families.

Christmas Night on the Farm by Maria Hoskins
The reader can almost feel the cold air and the kiss of snowflakes on their face as you open the pages of Hoskins’ book. The story is told in the rhyming style of The Night Before Christmas and brings readers to the farm as family begin to gather for the holiday. All the children are settling down for the night when the train whistle awakens one young girl. She peers out the window as angels from on high sing of the birth of Baby Jesus, which is celebrated each year on the little farm. Crymes’ illustrations are perfectly paired with the story and bring the African-American family to life with rich lush color. This is a perfect story to share with young children and to lead to a discussion of family and holiday traditions celebrated each year.

I read it Sunday night when I got settled in. It was like telling my thanksgiving dinners stories when I was a child at he with my grandparents. Those was some of the best days. So I try to keep it going on now although we don't have a farm.
